Character-A-Day Day 1: Original D&D!
Character A Day, Day One
Original D&D
Well, one of those challenges is going around where you make a character a day in a different gaming system for December. I don’t have to stick my head in an ice bucket, so, why not? As it usually takes me many days to do one of my detailed walkthroughs, for this, I’m just gonna roll up/design something and post the results. You can take my word that all die rolls are fair and honest, because, seriously, why cheat? What do I gain?
For the first day, let’s just start at the very beginning: Original D&D! Little brown books! For fun, I’ll include Greyhawk-Blackmoor-Eldritch Wizardry as options.
Martillus the Magic-User
Lawful
Str: 7 (Open Doors 1-2)
Int: 12 (50% chance to know spell, Min 4 spells, Max 6 spells, Max 6th level spells.)
Wis:5
Con:8 (50% chance of surviving resurrection, 55% surviving spells)
Dex: 5 (Missile fire -1)
Cha: 11
Starting Gold: 36 (after buying gear, below)
Hit Points: 2
Equipment: Dagger, Large Sack, Iron Rations, 50′ Rope, 10′ pole, 12 iron spikes, 6 torches
The OD&D rules really don’t explain how many spells a magic-user starts with! Based on the Intelligence, I guess I know 4 spells. One has to be Read Magic, of course. I rolled for the rest, using the Greyhawk lists:
Detect Magic, Hold Portal, and Read Languages.
Sheesh.
Fortunately, with 2 HP, he’ll be dead quickly and I can roll up someone else.
