The Abyss Project

OK, this may be the biggest windmill I've tilted at...

Ever since the earliest days of D&D, since before even Advanced D&D First Edition, we have had "The 666 Layers Of The Abyss". Sure, now it's some weird subdivision of the "Elemental Chaos" or whatever, but I don't give a frack. I have been looking for some interesting hook to toss on this site, something beyond all the usual "Here's some cool monsters, here's some rule mods" stuff. And I think I have found it.

I will document the Abyss.

That's right. Six hundred and sixty six layers.

Obviously, not in great detail -- I'm thinking 300-500 words per layer, and maybe a sample monster, magic item, or hook.  And, of course, there's going to be overlap -- I expect a lot of ocean layers, jungle layers, etc. Each should be at least a teeny bit different, though.

If I do two a week, it will take me a few years. :) Probably done in time for 5e.

I'm thinking of just statting it in 4e format, unless Pathfinder takes off madly. The main flavor text should be adaptable to damn near anything, though.

I will not use any currently "named" demons, lest I run into copyright issues, as WOTC has, after more than a year, still release no web policy. A lot of the coolest dudes are open thanks to Necromancer and the Tome of Horrors, but I want to play it as safe as possible.

This may go nowhere. I may give this up after 100, or 50, or 10. Or 1. But let it be known... I tried.

This is where the first 100 go. Hopefully, there'll be a second 100. At least.
